Challenge

The New Style of IT (Deployed) programme faced significant architectural and delivery challenges. Legacy solution architectures were poorly documented and hard to adapt, increasing the risk and cost of delivering new user-centric capabilities. There was a clear need for defined federation and interoperability requirements, and a cohesive roadmap that aligned enterprise strategy with programme execution.

Solution

ASU deployed architectural experts to guide the Service Design Authority through this complexity, focusing on coherence, interoperability, and enterprise alignment. The approach included:

  • Requirements Definition – Established a detailed list of interoperability and federation requirements to serve as the foundation for solution design and delivery.
  • Solution Architecture Development – Analysed existing architecture, developed solution options, and created a roadmap balancing technical constraints and strategic intent.
  • Enterprise-Level Documentation – Produced solution architecture descriptions and service directives to ensure alignment between enterprise goals and programme-specific needs.
  • Collaborative Integration – Maintained coherence across user, application, and information services, ensuring seamless federation across the enterprise IT environment.

Outcome

ASU’s involvement delivered a clear, actionable architecture that enabled Defence Digital’s Service Design Authority and delivery teams to:

  • Fully understand and prioritise federation and interoperability needs.
  • Align programme-level design decisions with enterprise strategy.
  • Deliver coherent solutions on time, even within demanding and technically complex programme timelines.

The programme now has a robust architectural foundation to guide future enhancements—improving flexibility, interoperability, and mission effectiveness in deployed environments.
